Monthly review – September 2022

Even though September is supposed to be a summer month for the most part, this year it was really hard to forget that Autumn and Winter were on their way. Thankfully, I managed to extend the summer a bit with some holidays at the beginning of the month, but since I have been back to Brussels, it is mostly grey and rainy.

My favourite things about this month:

A beautiful Portuguese beach from my trip in early September
  • The Name of the Wind – I read the first volume of this fantasy series a while back at the beginning of the year, and I have now picked up the second volume, and I love it! I realised this year how much of a difference it makes when you are actually really invested in the story of a book and when you really like it. I feel like many fantasy fans would know about this book, but if you don’t, I highly recommend it!
  • Quiet evenings – Ever since coming back from holidays and now that it is a bit colder outside, I am definitely entering my hibernation phase, and just staying in in the evening, having some tea, reading a bit and watching a series just sound like the perfect end for an autumn day. After a busy summer that I enjoyed to the last bit, I really cherish those quiet and slower evenings and I don’t feel like missing out on a lot too!
  • Two-year anniversary – This month, it was our two-year anniversary with my boyfriend, and we had a quiet celebration at home, creating a cosy indoor picnic with snacks inspired by each country we visited together. We also watched the Disney movie Raya and the Last Dragon, which I really liked!
  • Catching up with friends – After a few months where many friends were away (including myself), it was really nice to meet up again and catch up on our summer over a drink, a coffee or a dinner!

My latest trips and adventures

The typical Portugues azulejos
  • Holidays in Portugal – I haven’t talked about it on here yet, but I went on a week-long trip with my friends to Portugal, which is truly a stunning country – and some things there reminded me a lot of Seville! We visited Lisbon and Sintra first, then made our way to the South of the country, in Algarve, where we wandered about cute towns, went on breath-taking hikes and swam in the very cold sea. It was my first time in Portugal and I would love to go back and explore more parts of it!
  • Yoga class –I regularly do yoga at home, but this time I went to a “brunch & yoga” class in a place in Brussels that I really like. The class was very good and it made me realise that I quite missed going to classes like this. For the brunch part, I had pictured something tending more towards breakfast, but it was actually a voucher for the nearby food court, so in a way it was even better!

Hobbies and distractions:

  • Sewing a summer top – I have finally managed to dedicate some time to sewing a cute summer top this month! I wanted to do it June so that I could actually wear it (it is way too cold now), but life got in the way… though I did make it before the official last day of summer, which I’ll count as a win for my summer bucket list!
  • New series started – Now that my boyfriend and I have finished watching New Girl, we started two new series: This is Us and Never Have I Ever. The latter is more of a comedy 20-minute-episode series that follows the life of a first-generation Indian-American teenager. It’s funny, easy-going but at the same times touches on important topics. This is Us is about a family and their life and struggles. It feels like a very cosy and heartwarming show, with lots of wholesome and emotional moments. I have been really enjoying both of them!

General thoughts:

After a hectic summer of travelling and going out, I really enjoyed going back to a slower routine, staying home a bit more and having quiet days. I also started going to the office more regularly and overall, even though I still feel overwhelmed with the amount of things I would like to do, I definitely notice an improvement since the summer!

Looking forward to:

  • Yes, I will be going on holidays again, and this time, it will be a bigger trip near the end of October, that I am extremely excited about. I can’t wait to share more about it in here!
  • October: it’s my birthday month, it’s a month where the weather is supposed to be chillier but still nice, so I’m quite excited for it. Everything that comes after, not so much, but well, let’s take it one month at a time!

How was September for you? What are you looking forward to?

I really like Raya and the Last Dragon because the Southeast Asian elements of the movie feel and look authentic, down to a scene with a bowl of chili sauce, which is widely available at modest food joints here in Indonesia! I’ve been so intrigued by Portugal for a really long time, and I’ve heard mostly good things about it. Can’t wait to find out where you’re going next!

Even though I can’t really say much about the authenticity of the elements in Raya, I loved that it had many cultural aspects to it, and it did feel authentic and somehow “real”! Portugal seems like a wonderful country, and there are so many things to see there! I hope September was great for you too!

Sounds like things slowed down a bit in September for you, sandwiched between two holiday months, August and October. I watched Raya and the Last Dragon a while back, and it’s a fun film with Southeast Asian representation (whoo!). If you get the chance, I’d also recommend Turning Red, which is similar to Raya and even more adorable! Can’t wait to see where you go on your trip in October, and I’m sure it’ll be a great way to ring in your birthday!

Oh yes, I saw Turning Red a few months ago and loved it! Contrary to many other “older” Disney movies, they both felt a bit more authentic and more modern (and not just because of the animation)! Thanks for reading and I hope September treated you well too!

Yay! What did you think of it? I really like though I have to say Devi’s personality is so different than mine that I don’t resonate much with her character ahah! Thanks a lot for the bday wishes! I hope you have a great month of October!

how did you find the last season of New Girl? I thought sadly it was very disappointing… My last overseas trip took in Seville and Portugal – loved them both!

I thought it was not that bad, but I agree that it was a bit disappointing compared to all the previous ones. As with many “last seasons” of many series I feel like they should have added a few more episodes to the season as it felt like things were a bit rushed… Where did you go in Portugal? Seville is still one of my favourite cities ever, I’m glad you enjoyed it!

September was definitely a summer month for me with my official summer holiday in the southern Balkans. Well, too much rain, but the temperatures are still good. Lisbon, Sintra, I was there in April, what beautiful destinations.

Do I really have a choice? 🙂 Now that I’ve mentioned it, it’s been asked several times, but it will be a pleasure.

Oh gosh, get ready to cry so much as you watch This Is Us. It’s so good. I’ve never cried so much while watching a show… but in a good way.

Another fun month filled with exciting adventures! The upside of always being active is that when you finally get a day or two without activities, you’ll love every single second of peace and quiet more than ever before!! 😀 I can’t wait to see everything you’ll achieve in October knowing what’s coming hahah
