Belgium’s Blue Forest

As with some of my previous local adventures, this new one is all about flowers and specifically about bluebells. These pretty purple flowers look like tiny little bells and were in full bloom at the end of April. They are usually found in woodlands and are typically associated with fairies and magic.

If you have ever been to a bluebell wood, this probably won’t surprise you, as when they are in full bloom, they basically cover the ground like a wonderful purple carpet. If you add a few rays of sunshine peaking through the new leaves of the trees, you find yourself in a fairyland, waiting to see a fairy pop out at any time!

This is the experience I had of a bluebell forest at least! As I have said in my latest Monthly Review, I went, a few weeks ago, to the Hallerbos forest, located a few kilometres south of Brussels. This beech wood is famous worldwide for its millions of bluebells which, each year, cover the ground with their amazing colour and fill the air with their fresh and sweet fragrance.

Since the Hallerbos forest is so close to Brussels, it was absolutely perfect for a local adventure! We hopped on the car and within half an hour we were admiring this gorgeous display the nature had to offer, walking around the beautiful trees and flowers. Even though the pictures absolutely don’t do it justice, the atmosphere really felt magical, like a fairyland, and the colours were absolutely stunning – from the bright green of the new beech leaves to the blue and purple of the beautiful bluebells.

Have you ever been to a bluebell wood? What is your favourite flower?

Where was your last local adventure?

I’ve never been to a bluebell forest, but the one you went to is really lovely! ❤ A "purple carpet," indeed! I've been to poppy fields north of my hometown, but it's more of a "land on fire" kind of image than a gentle, rolling carpet of color…I will have to venture to Belgium again to check out the bluebells, for sure!

Oh my goodness, how beautiful; sometimes it’s hard to believe that such places really exist! There are a few bluebell woodlands in Ireland that I try to visit every year, and much to my surprise the amazement of seeing the sheer volume of these beautiful, bell-shaped flowers never fades away. According to folklore, the bulbs are extremely toxic and this toxicity is the origin of the superstitious belief that anyone who wanders into a ring of bluebells will fall under fairy enchantment and soon after die or any human who heard a bluebell ring would soon die.

I am sure it would be nice if they could replace ‘would soon die’ with something more constructive and uplifting like ‘would get married soon but then again, for some reason, death is a theme in the myths of many cultures. Thanks for sharing and have a nice evening, Juliette. It’s a big day for Ireland tomorrow, all the non-essential shops are finally opening! It’s been nearly five months! Cheers. Aiva 🙂 xxx

I had no idea there was this myth around bluebells! For sure it would be better if it was something a bit more uplifting, especially since walking in a bluebell forwst feels like such a beautiful and magical experience – but maybe that is the reason why 😊 Thank you for sharing this, I hope you could enjoy the reopening of non-essential shops! Things are getting back to normal and it feels amazing! Have a nice day!

Lovely pictures. I have photographed similar underwoods, I can’t remember if it was in Ireland or Canada, maybe both. It’s true that a blue ground is quite counter-intuitive which fosters fantastic and mythical stories.

Apparently bluebells really need a specific setting to bloom: not too warm yet not too cold, and a lot of sunlight, so it has to be at the beginning of spring, when the trees don’t have all of their leaves yet! It is really beautiful, I hope you get to experience it one day 😊

These kinds of plants always remind me of Lily of the valley and because of its poisonous nature, I can’t help but attribute it to any other bell-formed plants hahah Glad you had a blast exploring this place though! Thanks for sharing, Juliette! 😀

Well, apparently their bulbs are poisonous, but you can’t really go in anyways as there are fences (and you don’t want to step on the flowers)! They are absolutely beautiful though, and I definitely see myself going back there next year! Thanks for dropping by Lashaan 😊
