As with some of my previous local adventures, this new one is all about flowers and specifically about bluebells. These pretty purple flowers look like tiny little bells and were in full bloom at the end of April. They are usually found in woodlands and are typically associated with fairies and magic.
If you have ever been to a bluebell wood, this probably won’t surprise you, as when they are in full bloom, they basically cover the ground like a wonderful purple carpet. If you add a few rays of sunshine peaking through the new leaves of the trees, you find yourself in a fairyland, waiting to see a fairy pop out at any time!
This is the experience I had of a bluebell forest at least! As I have said in my latest Monthly Review, I went, a few weeks ago, to the Hallerbos forest, located a few kilometres south of Brussels. This beech wood is famous worldwide for its millions of bluebells which, each year, cover the ground with their amazing colour and fill the air with their fresh and sweet fragrance.
Since the Hallerbos forest is so close to Brussels, it was absolutely perfect for a local adventure! We hopped on the car and within half an hour we were admiring this gorgeous display the nature had to offer, walking around the beautiful trees and flowers. Even though the pictures absolutely don’t do it justice, the atmosphere really felt magical, like a fairyland, and the colours were absolutely stunning – from the bright green of the new beech leaves to the blue and purple of the beautiful bluebells.
