Monthly Review – June 2020

Again, I can’t believe it’s already the end of June. I was so looking forward to the summer yet I feel like I haven’t accomplished a lot or done anything recently. It is obviously not true, but I guess I just wished I could have done more. As always!

My favourite things about this month:

  • The easing of the lockdown restrictions: cafes and bars can finally open here in Belgium and I am super excited to be able to go again to some amazing places that I love. I am still a bit hesitant with bars as I don’t go out very often and they usually feel very crowded, but restaurants and cafes – I’m here for it! So far I could return to an amazing Lebanese restaurant super close to my place, as well as a nice cafΓ© that serves delicious coffees and smoothies. Now, I can’t wait to go out for brunch!
  • Summer clothes: that might sound a bit superficial but the temperatures have sometimes (emphasis on β€œsometimes”…) been high enough for me to wear my nice dresses and shorts, and this has put me in a great mood!

My latest trips and adventures

  • Since the beginning of this β€œseries”, I haven’t been able to put a single trip on this list, so now I am very excited to announce that there is one!! As you might have seen on my latest post, I went for a short holiday in Italy to see my family, and this was a much-needed break. You can read more about it here!
  • On another note, not as exciting but still great, I started the month of June with a lovely picnic in the park with my flatmates! We took our bikes and went a bit further away from the centre, enjoying the sunny weather and some delicious snacks!

Hobbies and distractions:

  • This month I have really enjoyed a series called Anne with an E on Netflix. It talks about a young red-headed orphan that finds a new home in rural Canada and struggles with the day-to-day life of a normal young teenager. It is light and interesting, yet it addresses many important topics. I strongly recommend it!
  • Another series I thoroughly enjoyed is HBO’s Tchernobyl, which you probably know about at this point. Yes, I am late! However, I found it extremely interesting and well-made. I knew very little about this fact before, and this has helped me to gain some perspective and insight on that matter. I also really recommend it!
  • I am also reading many different books at the moment: one about Russian history, where the author talks about the Russian mindset and development through its people – super interesting and actually quite easy to read! Another one is called Serendipity, and it has been written by an Italian businessman, owner of a very famous food mall chain. Each small chapter is dedicated to a meal or specialty that was created β€œby mistake”, so it is basically a lot of small interesting facts that are very entertaining and make you hungry!

General thoughts:

The month of June was for me a reset month. I have felt a bit lost at the end of May and throughout June, so I really needed to do some thinking and find some direction in my life, with my side projects and everything. Here is what I did:

  • I had a proper β€œreset” where I tackled the small nagging tasks that had been bothering me for a long time. Surprisingly, it didn’t even take that much time!
  • I took some time to think about what I wanted in life and specifically for the next few months. I reflected about how to get there and what were my best options.
  • With the help of the amazing Life Map by Youtuber MuchelleB, I wrote everything down, realigned with my yearly theme and my intentions. This was so helpful and I cannot recommend this resource enough for everyone who wants to live a more intentional life!
  • And I was left with some sort of plan, giving me the direction I needed to tackle in the best way possible the next months!

Looking forward to:

  • More local adventures: I feel like I haven’t done a proper one in so long, so I can’t wait to pick up a new small thing to do and share it here!
  • As I said, June was my reset month, so now I am all ready and fresh for July! I am looking forward to tackle my new goals (focusing especially on language learning) and be more focused and intentional. It kinda feels like a second new year!
  • Summer holidays: Yes! I am going on holiday again at the end of the month. Still to visit my family, but I couldn’t be more excited. This time it will be a bit longer so I will also properly disconnect from work to enjoy the South of France and Italy.

How was June for you? What are you looking forward to?

Yes, it’s hard to believe that half of the year has gone so fast! We are glad to see most of the restrictions lifted in Ireland but still taking precautions and not heading to the shops first thing in the morning. Who would want the second wave of pandemic crisis to deal with in the winter, certainly not me. We are spending time exploring local trails and beaches and I finally took up surfing last week. Can’t wait to go back to the ocean. Thanks for sharing and take care, my friend 😊 Aiva

Yes exactly, the lifting of the restrictions doesn’t mean that things are completely back to normal and we still need to be careful! So happy for you that you are able to explore a bit more your country, and surfing sounds amazing!! Thanks for dropping by and stay safe! 😊

I’m so glad restrictions are easing for you! Ours did briefly but there were some new cases so we’re back in lockdown – but i’d rather that than a full blown second wave. I am very jealous you’re hitting your summer though! We’re in winter over here and i desperately miss the sun xx

I also hope we’re not going to have a second wave… Ahaha if it makes you feel better I’m always very jealous of people living on the other hemisphere when we are hitting our winter πŸ˜„ Thanks a lot for your comment and take care!

“Anne of Green Gables” – the novel the series is based on is amazing. Definitely read it if you have the time!

So lucky that restrictions are lifting across EU. India is still grappling with covid. πŸ˜“

Yes! Someone told me recently that it was originally a novel so I can’t wait to discover it too! Thanks for reminding me 😊 Really sad to hear that you are still in the middle of the crisis… Here the number of cases is going up again every day, and I hope we don’t have to go through a second lockdown… Thank you so much for your comment and stay safe 😊

I’m glad to hear that you loved Chernobyl so much. It was a phenomenal mini-series that shows a lot of humanity’s flaws. I do hope that July will bring you as much fun and rest as you need to feel accomplished and happy! πŸ˜€
