The South of France is pretty well-known for its lavender fields. The best season to see them is summer, usually from mid-June to mid-July, as they are in full bloom and haven’t been harvested yet.
There are actually a lot of places where you can see lavender fields, but the most famous one is probably the Valensole Plateau, where the many fields stretch across hills as far as the eye can see.
I had already seen the Valensole Plateau last year; however, I went there too late in the summer, and most of the lavender had been harvested already. This year, I decided to go in late June, and the difference was huge! This time, there were purple fields everywhere, and cute bees were happily buzzing around and flying from one flower to the next. The smell was also amazing.
We went there in the late afternoon, and I’m really glad we did as the sun was starting to set, and the light was low, golden and warm. A lot of other people had the same idea too, so we had to actually walk a bit to find a spot to photograph without having someone crouching between the rows of lavender with a huge camera or very well-dressed girls twirling around, aiming for the perfect Instagram picture. We also saw a couple taking wedding pictures!
At one point, between two lavender fields, there was a huge sunflower field, adding a touch of warm, lighter colours to this purple-hued picture. I was actually wearing a sunflower dress, so a picture with the sunflowers was absolutely mandatory – you can see it on my Instagram.
I really love sunflowers and these ones were really beautiful, though maybe a bit small, probably because they usually bloom a bit later in the year.
A lot of pictures were taken on this local adventure, so it makes for great memories and cool background images. If you visit the South of France in the summer one day, I strongly recommend going to see the lavender fields. There are some very famous spots, but you can also find some scattered around in the countryside.
